Illustrated Tweets: @tryjen

Selected tweets from people I follow, taken out of context.

"your overcoat is quite spongy", said La Rue.

If you've seen my other illustrated tweets, you'll notice that this one looks different. That's because instead of drawing it in my sketchbook with a colored pencil, I used the Brushes app on my iPhone. Very handy if I have time to kill and no sketchbook with me.

The app is pretty feature-rich and I'm just barely beginning to understand how to use it. But I think that, for a first attempt, this isn't too bad. I just have to keep the drawings very simple; it's not very good for precise detail.

So thanks for that.

My Resolutions for 2013

Perhaps I should also resolve to either get a larger scanner or use smaller drawing paper.

Margin Doodles No. 34

More doodles from my freshman Latin notebook. I'm getting a little tired of wallowing in the 80's, so I'm being a little more selective about what I scan. Only a couple more pages' worth before I reach the end of the notebook.

I included this as an example of the side ponytails
I drew on a lot of my doodle girls. Dig the scrunchie.

Margin Doodles No. 33

Really, the 80's weren't all that different from today. Another doodle from my freshman Latin notebook:

Margin Doodles No. 32

Today's ancient doodle comes with a riddle. I liked to make up my own secret codes and word puzzles, and the phrase with the missing letters below is an example. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was supposed to say.

Other than that, another perm makeover doodle, a declaration in Spanish that I am strange, several decorative monograms, and the oh-so-80's command to "Twip out!"

Update: I've decoded the message, and it's kind of embarrassing, scary, and hilarious all at the same time: GEORGE MICHAELS, PATRICK SWAYZE, AND LARRY (FROM THE NEW MONKEES) ARE FINE!
What did they all have in common? Blonde mullets.

Margin Doodles No. 31

Continuing with doodles from my freshman Latin notebook, here's a visual hint for how to pronounce the Latin word "tubicines" (trumpeters).

Why yes, that is a Super Mario mushroom.

Another mess o' doodles from farther down the same page.

The girl on the right is not a prostitute, she's just showing off some fly late-80's fashion.
I think the lady on the bottom, however, looks kinda trampy in her stockings & slip. Scuba Dooper, indeed.

Margin Doodles No. 30

This image gave me a start when I came across it in my old notebook.

Kylan, the guy I had a crush on my freshman year, ended up marrying his high school sweetheart and joining the navy. He was killed in Iraq in 2003. He was incredibly smart as well as just an all around good guy. The world is a better place for his having lived, and I know his family and friends miss him terribly.

I don't know why I decided to write the lyrics from "Candle in the Wind" next to his picture all those years ago, but it seems sort of appropriate now.

Draw Something Highlights

I like playing Draw Something, when I can get my husband or kids to relinquish the iPad for a few minutes. Here are a few of my favorite drawings I've done.

Margin Doodles No. 29

More from my freshman Latin notebook, where I'm trying to figure out how to pronounce "Eutychus."

Margin Doodles No. 28

Girly doodles today. I did promise not to post any of the cruel caricatures of my classmates, but I feel all right about showing you the flattering ones.
The top picture is my classmate.
The bottom girl is me practicing drawing curls.

Makeover, doodle style! Note the can of mousse in the 5th panel.

Margin Doodles No. 27

Today, I'd like to show you some lovely goth gals from my freshman Latin notebook.

Doesn't she look a little like Laura Brannigan?
The text says "It's a nice day for a black wedding."

Margin Doodles No. 26

This was my favorite song my freshman year of high school:

Don't recognize the song from my doodles? Here's the video:

Margin Doodles No. 25

This was written on the same page as last week's doodles:

I can't believe my handwriting ever looked this nice.

I wouldn't normally post that, but it's part of the context of the doodle on the next page:

Dig the jams & Espadrilles. Catch a wave, dude!

Yeah. OK, whatever.

Margin Doodles No. 24

These doodles were drawn on the other side of the page containing last week's doodles. The poor notebook paper was thoroughly defeated by my quad-colored ball-point pen: there was a lot of bleed-through, and even with judicious Photoshop manipulation I had a hard time getting clean images.

Which is a shame, because this first one has to be one of my all-time favorite doodles. It's a complete non-sequetur; I don't know what inspired it.

Not so the next doodle on the page. This is a cryptic tribute to two guys I had crushes on at the time. I used math symbols for my crush code names: does it get any geekier than that?

Margin Doodles No. 23

This page from my freshman Latin notebook had so many doodles, I decided to just scan the whole thing. From top to bottom, this doodlepalooza features

  • a word puzzle (toybabesland)
  • an 80s punk band reference
  • monograms
  • Prisses
  • a pictorial rendering of the phrase "died on the vine"
  • and so much more!

Margin Doodles No. 22

I have made a point of never including in these posts any cruel caricatures of my classmates that I've found in my old high school notebooks. And, yes, I have found several. But even though I disliked a few certain people for whatever reason all those years ago, a lot of them were and are still my friends, and I want bygones to stay bygones.

However, I am reasonably sure this guy doesn't resemble anyone I knew:

Dude seriously needs some coffee.

This poor girl probably would have turned out OK if I hadn't gone overboard on the contoured shading. She looks like a "before" picture in a Botox ad:

I think this guy is supposed to be one of the characters
from my Latin book.

Check out bean-head over on the left. Is that supposed to be a kerchief?

"Tarantara" is what the policemen sing in Pirates of Penzance

Margin Doodles No. 21

Today in the ongoing saga of my freshman Latin notebook, we have a mystery! What doodle was so horrible, so offensive, or (most likely) so potentially embarrassing that I felt compelled to cut it out of the page?

A clue to the mystery: I can tell that the poofy-haired girl is supposed to
be Carrie Dollanganger as she looked in either the 2nd or 3rd book in
V.C. Andrews' Flowers in the Attic series.

Apparently I spent the rest of this class period practicing drawing braids.

Ja, vould you like some cocoa?

Then I had some fun doing a doodle makeover with my 4-colored ballpoint pen.
